Alberta has introduced a regulated online gambling market, becoming the second Canadian province to implement a competitive licensing framework. The new system officially permits private companies to operate sportsbooks and digital casinos within the region.
Fifty companies have completed registration with Alberta Gaming, Liquor & Cannabis. Approved platforms include DraftKings, BetMGM, FanDuel, PointsBet, theScore Bet, bet365 and BetRivers. The Alberta iGaming Corporation now oversees all licensed digital sportsbooks and casino products under the provincial regulatory structure.
Revenue Projections and Market Timing
Provincial legislation established the licensing model over several years, with government projections estimating approximately $1 billion in gambling revenue during the inaugural operating year. The market opening coincides with the final stages of the FIFA World Cup, featuring the remaining semi-finals and championship match, which authorities expect to drive initial betting volume.
Provincial officials note that roughly 70 percent of current gambling activity in Alberta already occurs through internationally licensed websites, and AiGC chief executive officer Dan Keene indicated the regulated platform will capture a larger portion of this activity.
The regulatory approach follows the Ontario licensing system introduced in 2022. Data from an IPSOS 2025 study shows Ontario channelization at approximately 83.7 percent, indicating that nearly 16 percent of users in that jurisdiction continue utilizing offshore services.
