Serbia’s Finance Ministry Opposes New Betting Venue Restrictions

Serbia’s Ministry of Finance has advised parliamentarians against supporting proposed amendments to gambling legislation. The ministry, headed by Novica Vuković, issued the directive this week following a draft bill introduced by Serbian Democracy representatives Vaso Obradović and Milica Rondović.

The legislative draft introduces stricter zoning requirements for gambling operators. Under the new framework, any newly established betting facility must maintain a minimum separation of 80 metres from other venues. The NSD representatives introduced the measure to establish clearer spatial guidelines for the sector.

Finance officials have formally requested that lawmakers withhold approval for the amendment. The ministry’s position centers on maintaining current regulatory conditions for gambling operators. Vuković’s department emphasized that additional spatial restrictions could impact commercial planning without delivering measurable benefits to the sector.

Legislative Review Process

The draft amendment remains under parliamentary review. Lawmakers will evaluate the zoning proposal alongside broader gambling market regulations before scheduling a final vote. The finance ministry continues to monitor legislative developments affecting the sector.
